Books and Podcasts

Our writers have been busy. Check out our writers' page for the books written by some of our sixth class boys and for some fun new podcasts by our fifth class boys.

It's another Pius Win!

We're not a science and technology school for nothing! While our intrepid hurlers were enjoying th limelight on Thursday, another event was taking place. Some of our fourth class scientists were competing in the Junior Engineering Class of Ireland 2009 competition. Over to Ronan for the match report!
On Thursday 18th June, Ronan, Jamie, Daragh, Eamon, Conor, Ms. Mooney and Ms. Dunne went to the Helix in DCU. We had done a project on the William J. Dargan bridge in Dundrum. We had started the project late last year. We put together a scrap book and got 97 out of 100. We were really happy with the result.
St. Pius was one of the top 40 schools in Ireland. We were in the 3rd and 4th class category (There were other kids there in the 5th and 6th class category). First we set up our stand. We put the model of the bridge and other cool things on the table. We put our poster on the wall. We placed our bridge made from art straws on the floor close to the table.
When the judges came around they really liked our artstraw bridge. We answered lots of questions. We also had to complete a K'Nex challenge: build a Da Vinci machine.
Eventually we were called into the theatre for the results. We couldn't believe it when St. Pius X was called out. We received a cool trophy which is outside the office so that all the boys and visitors can see it. We are the Junior Engineering 2009 Class of Ireland.

National Children’s Choir in National Concert Hall

The National Children’s Choir performed in the National Concert Hall last weekend on Saturday the 6th, Sunday the 7th and Monday the 8th of June. Approximately one thousand children from all over Ireland performed in the concerts. Thirteen boys from St. Pius X Boys School performed in the Monday night concert. The concert was conducted by Anne Purcell. Compére for the evening was Ray Darcy.
The concert was a huge success. It was amazing to see and hear the children perform such a varied repertoire to such a high standard. The concert began with ‘Any Dream Will Do’ from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat’ and continued with songs including ‘Túirne Mháire’, ‘Daydream Believer’, ‘Do You Hear the People Sing’ and ‘Ave Maria’. The concert concluded with the uplifting ‘You Raise Me Up’ to which the children received a thunderous applause and a standing ovation – there were very few dry eyes in the audience!
Our boys were absolutely fantastic. It was a wonderful experience for them, and one which they will cherish in the years to come. Well done to all!

Olympic Handball Team are All Ireland Champs

The boys of St. Pius won the All Ireland U13 olympic handball championship in Moate, Co. Westmeath. James Archbold captained the team which consisted of Séamus Owens, Enzo Patriarcha, Oisín Hogan, Seán Mahon, Neil Walsh, Luke Crehan, Nathan Delaney, Michael Haddock, Mark Maguire and Colm Hayes.
In the final heats St Pius played three matches beating Dalkey, Oranmore and St. Oliver's (Meath). The final game against St. Oliver's was thrilling as St. Oliver's took the lead. The scores evened up with ten minutes remaining and then St. Pius pulled ahead.
Enzo was awarded man of the match. Our goalkeeper, Neil was in tremendous form all day stopping shots from all angles. All members of the squad showed great determination and dedication throughout the entire campaign.
Olympic handball was first introduced to St. Pius by Finola Lynch, a former PE teacher who sadly passed away in 2000. Now retired infants' teacher, Mary Kneafsey, took over the coaching and won an all-Ireland title in 2003. Mary presented the team with a set of olympic handball jerseys which continue to bring them good luck. The team is now managed by Aileen Dunne, Linda Pléamonn and Marion O'Donovan. Much help, support and tips are provided by André Eriksson.

K'Nex Continues

The boys in Ms. Lally's class are already preparing for next year's K'Nex challenge. Look at the merry-go-round that Andrew, Matt, Stephen and Seán made.

H & S

For health and safety reasons we would ask parents not to drive into the school yard at any time.
