TROCAIRE
We know the boys are doing their utmost,
collecting for this worthy cause. We will of course be delighted to accept
the boxes, but we would ask you not
to send them until after Easter as we cannot accommodate them before then.

CHILD PROTECTION
All staff attended a course on the StaySafe and Child Protection
Guidelines on 13th March.
As you already know if there is a matter of concern relating to abuse
of children we are obliged to refer this to the local Health Board.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS
Although the sacrament
of Confirmation was celebrated over a month ago, the spirit of the Holy
Spirit is still very much in evidence with our 6th Class students.
Both Ms. Corcoran’s and Mr. Coyle’s classes are donating money to two very
worthy charities. Each year, pupils are asked to make a presentation on their
favourite Charity and a class vote was taken. The winning charities this year
are the “Haematology Day Ward at St. James’ Hospital” (Ms. Corcoran’s class)
and the “Buy a Brick” project in India (Mr. Coyle’s class). A representative from both
charities will come to the school after Easter to receive the donation and
explain to the classes how their money will be spent. This is further proof,
if it were needed, of the caring and mature attitude that is present in all
of our 6th Class boys.
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS
We purchased 2 new
Interactive Whiteboards recently and they are being employed with great effect
and particular enthusiasm from the boys in 2nd class. This brings our total to 11. (including the
Science Room.)

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Communion preparations
are going very well for the two 2nd classes.
We celebrated First Penance on 24th March in St. Pius X Church with
Fr. Karl. This very special, solemn
occasion went wonderfully well on the night.
The boys put a great effort into the art work that was on display, and
we would also like to thank Anne Purcell and the choir for the beautiful
singing. With regular trips down to
the church for Mass, the boys are well on their way towards being fully
prepared for their big day on 16th May.
Mr Gough and Mr Matthews would like to thank all the parents of the
2nd Class boys for their continued support in helping their boys prepare for
their First Holy Communion.
CONFIRMATION
The Sacrament of Confirmation was received by our 6th class boys on the 28th February, It was a wonderful, memorable occasion and
I would like to thank the teachers, Ms. Corcoran and Mr Coyle for all their
effort in making the day very special for the boys and their families.

Our
after-school choir was very busy this term. The choir performed at Cór Fhéile
na Scoileanna in the National Basketball Arena on Thursday, March 5th.
The boys were wonderful and received a glowing report from the moltóir. The
boys performed three songs: Five Eyes, Tá Mé ‘mo Shuí and Daydream Believer. On
Friday, March 6th, the choir participated in the Wesley Interschools
Festival. While the choir didn’t win this time, they performed superbly. It is
wonderful to see all sixty two boys representing our school so well. The choir
is busy rehearsing for the upcoming AIMS Festival in New Ross which will be
held on May 22nd. The boys really enjoy travelling to competitions
outside Dublin.
The two fourth
classes are beavering away revising the words and songs for their upcoming
concert with the National Children’s Choir in the National Basketball Arena on
Wednesday, April 22nd. The boys will perform a repertoire of twenty
songs with approximately 500 children from other schools in Dublin. This will be
a spectacular event and one which we’re all looking forward to. Tickets
are available to buy at the door!
SCIENCE
3rd & 4th
classes have been busy planting seeds and strawberry plants as part of the
“Incredible Edibles” challenge and are looking forward to harvesting some
“fruit and veg” in the summer months!
Ms. Mooney’s patios are in full bloom and are a delight to see.
The Science2Life Show was
back again for 5th and 6th classes and everyone
thoroughly enjoyed the show which was both fun and educational.
Mr O’Fathartá’s boys are
extremely busy with the “K’NEX Challenge” under the watchful guidance of Ms.
Mooney. All the class participated in
the K’NEX which was judged by Mark Noonon from Steps to Engineering
Ireland. The challenge winners were
Ronan McCabe and John O’Brien. The
Experience Engineering Project completed by Eamon, Darragh, Ronan, Jamie and
Conor has now been sent off and we anxiously await the results. Good Luck Boys!!!!!!!

HURLING
The hurlers have made a
fantastic start to the year once again.
For the first time in the history of the school, St. Pius have entered
four hurling teams. This will allow
the huge numbers training to get plenty of games. Our senior and junior green teams have
picked up full points so far in their respective competitions. Unfortunately our Senior Navy and Junior
Navy teams were narrowly defeated in both of their first games. However, they are improving steadily and
are showing great promise for the games ahead. A development squad has also been set up
for the younger players who are starting off.
This is proving very successful, with huge numbers turning out every
Wednesday in Bushy Park.
They were victorious in their first game last week narrowly beating
close neighbours St. Josephs .
A big thank you to Sean
Crowley our G.P.O. from Faughs. Seán
is doing trojan work with the Junior , Senior, Ist and 2nd
classes. Any boys who would like to
train or play with Faughs are very welcome.
If you would like information on joining Faughs club, you can contact
Seán on 085 1332020.

GAELIC FOOTBALL
Following on from our
fantastic win in Croke Park last December, St.
Pius X's footballers were chosen to be in the spotlight once again on
Saturday, 14th March, in Parnell Park. Our victorious senior
panel was asked to show off their skills at an exhibition match played during
half time of the National Football League game involving Dublin Vs Derry.
In addition, the panel
also welcomed the competing counties onto the pitch at the beginning of the
match. To be asked to do this was a huge honour for the school and further
recognition, if it were needed, of the significance of winning the Corn Mhic
Caoilte.
In
preparation for the 2009 season, the hugely popular 3rd and 4th
Class Football Tournament will take place in the final term. This annual
competition allows all interested pupils in these classes to experience
playing football in a team setting, regardless of ability. Added to this,
trials for our school teams will be taking place in May and June. After
winning 3 football titles last season, Mr. Kerins, Mr. Coyle, Ms. Keogh and
Mr. Gough are determined to do even better next year!

OLYMPIC HANDBALL
We
have had a very successful year so far with our Senior and Junior Olympic
Handball teams. This year our senior
Olympic Handball captain is James Archbold.
The Senior team have played four matches in Blanchardstown. We played two games against St. Kevin’s
Kilnamanagh and won both. The
results: 11 – 8 and 14 – 9. We played two matches against St. Patrick’s
Corduff and won both. The results: 15 –
6 and
19
– 7. We are now into the Dublin Semi –Finals which will be played this
week. We will be playing our old rivals
Hollypark. Good luck and well done to
all the boys on our Senior Olympic Handball team. One player who has really excelled this year
is Enzo Patriarca. He has scored the
highest amount of goals in the tournament so far. Well done to him.
The
Junior Olympic Handball team played their first two matches last week in
Cabra. They won both games against St.
Peter’s Phibsboro ( 11 – 4)and St. Patrick’s Chapelizod (4 – 0). We now qualify
for the Division 1 Final. This will be
played after the Easter holidays. Well
done to all the Junior Olympic Handball team.
We
would also like to thank Andreas who comes to some of our training sessions and
helps us with new skills and tactics. We
want to express our sincere thanks to everyone who supported and contributed to
our cakesale to raise funds for the Olympic Handball teams. It was a huge success and all the €1,610.00
money raised will go towards buses and transport for our up coming
matches.
Looking forward to an exciting end of season.
GOLF
Our golf recommenced
recently after the Winter break and we look forward to taking part in the
Castle Cup Competition next term. Hopefully
we will perform at our best and thankfully we still have ample numbers taking
part. A special word of thanks to all
teachers who have supervised the boys at the
Spawell.
