ST. PIUS X BOYS NATIONAL SCHOOL
EASTER: After a very successful term on all fronts Easter is upon us already. Please remember to return Trocaire boxes to class teacher before the holidays. School closes at 12.00 noon Friday and children will return on Monday, March 31st.Bíodh saoire iontach agaibh!
OLYMPIC HANDBALL: The U.13 Olympic handball team has enjoyed a great run of success under the guidance of
L. Pleamonn and A. Dunne. They have qualified for the Dublin Area Finals which take place on April 16th. Well done!
NEW INFANT INTAKE: Enrolment of infants for year 2008 – 2009 is almost complete.
CHOIR: The school choir has been very busy since our last Newsletter. The boys performed wonderfully at the Wesley Interschools Festival on Friday, 29th February and were delighted to achieve 3rd place in the competition.
The choir was invited to sing at the official opening of Cór Fhéile na Scoileanna in the National Basketball Arena on Tuesday, March 4th. The boys performed three songs and received rapturous applause and a glowing adjudication. The boys were thrilled to see so many parents and teachers supporting them at both events. The choir will be travelling to Bangor Co. Down on April 17th to compete in the Bangor International Choral Festival. Go n’eírí go breá leo!
COMMUNION PREPARATION: Communion preparations are going very well for the two 2nd classes. We celebrated First Penance on 18th February in St. Pius X Church with Fr. Karl. This very special, solemn occasion went wonderfully well on the night. The boys put in a great effort for the art work that was on display, and we would also like to thank Anne Purcell and her 5th Class boys for the beautiful singing provided. With regular trips down to the church for Mass, the boys are well on their way towards being fully prepared for their big day on 17th May. Mr Matthews and Ms. Mooney would like to thank all the parents of the 2nd Class boys for their continued and appreciated work in helping their boys prepare during this special year.
CONFIRMATION: 6th Classes of Miss Corcoran and Mr. Coyle have been continuing their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation that they will receive on April 12th. As part of their lenten promises, both classes have been attending morning mass in St. Pius X Church. In addition to this, on Wednesday 20th February, the boys took part in a Penitential Service, lead by our chaplin, Fr. Karl Fortune. Alongside all this activity, the classes have continued to work hard in class, particularly with regard to their Confirmation Scrapbooks. We have no doubt that these trojan efforts will be apparent to all on April 12th.
HURLING: Since Christmas our senior team, two junior teams and third class boys have been training in Bushy Park. Numbers are extremely high and due to this we have entered a second junior team into a competition. Our new junior team got off to a winning start beating Scoil Archbishop Ryan Lucan in Clondalkin on Tuesday. A massive thank you to David Needham (Faughs) for his work with first and second classes since September. In the coming months we will have a first/second class blitz and a third/fourth class blitz in Tymon Park. We also plan on taking Senior Infants out hurling during school in May & June when the weather gets warmer. Finally a big thank you to all teachers involved
B. Dillon, G. Corcoran, P. Robinson and G. O’Fátharta.
SCIENCE: The K’NEX Challenge: 4th class boys took part in the K’NEX challenge on the 5th March. The boys were given a challenge of designing and building a vintage car from K’NEX by our local engineer Anne Crowley. She was very impressed with the models and had a very difficult task in selecting a winner. Kenan Cruz-Harrison and Lorcan O’Brien were chosen and will go on to represent our school in the Regional Finals later in the year. Check out our web site to see what went on and to see some of our models.
TESCO VOUCHERS: Collection of the Tesco vouchers has started again. It runs from the 3rd March – 5th May. We are also recycling ink cartridges & mobile phones. Your support is very much appreciated.
